It's a shame the Titan was never really able to overcome the odds that were against it.Certainly it was not the double deck equivalent to The Leyland National.Even though Leyland were claiming that! It was a good design and in some ways similar to the RouteMaster;it became almost exclusive to London. Now these vehicles are scattered acrosss the land,Reading was one of the few operators to take them.

The main difference is that although it has a Volvo badge on the front hinting its a B10M, its actually a LEYLAND TIGER, a completely different beast, albeit with very similar chassis and both having mid engines. Volvo made the Tiger extinct when they bought Leyland Bus.

SCRAP unfortunately, although 5208 has been preserved by GMTS. Similar Garndener engined 5320 is still with us, preserved by Selnec Preservation Society. I could never get it into my head that these new buses (even though they were over 15 years old and would have been withdrawn by GMPTE earlier) were being disposed of as they were excellent buses. Apparently corrosion had taken a heavy toll on them though as the preservationists would testify to.

I understand the Coronations were introduced in 1953, hence the name, apparently there were ten of them originally, and they suffered from being very extravagant . They are now down to one preserved example, this one, which is well restored. If one has a look at the Rail website 'Ficticious Liveries' one can find a picture of this vehicle in Rail Blue, showing what might have been if the Tramway had been taken over by British Rail. Its a very effective and interesting picture.

This wonderfull Tram shows what can be done with modern Tramcar design. it shows Blackpool have not lost their ability to design new Trams. My jaw dropped when I first saw one, a few years back now. They are beautifull well proportioned cars, again rebuilt from Balloons. I understand there are ten of them, lets hope more are done.

This Tram was built in1979, and its sister, 762, was built in 1982, as experimental one man operated designs. 761 is single doored, whilst 762 is dual doored. They form Blackpool's 'Jubilee' Class. They were built at Rigby Road works, with Bodywork reminicent of that found on Leyland Atlantean's. the Body Work is I understand by Blackpool with assistance from MetSec, a subsidury of Duple, and a company mainly associated with bodywork for Asian and Far East vehicles. Unfortunately there were only ever two of these, and over the years both have had to suffer being painted in horrific liveries (if livery is the correct word to use), which Blackpool have imposed on them from time to time. Both started out as standard Ballon Cars, 761 was formerly 725, and 762 was formerly 714. As far as I know both are still active in Blackpool.

Reading Buses were crazy to sell this and 6 other low floor Spectras and to leave step entrance buses in their wake. I see sense has finally prevailed, apart from 3 Metroriders and the former Eastbourne Spectras. Maybe they are to be replaced by new low floor buses.EnsignBus were very keen to acquire these vehicles and seem very happy with them!

I wished that Reading Buses had sold the ex Eastbourne Buses examples,as they were not low-floor vehicles. The way they were kept and Low floor buses were sold made little sense to me. I was aware one of the buses sold to Ensign was damaged in an accident but surely Ensign Bus could have rebuilt it,was it a fire victim?

These two are former Cleveland Transit Leyland Atlanteans acquired by East Yorkshire in1990. They formed a class of fifteen buses ordered by Stockton Corporation in 1969, but were delivered to Teesside Municipal Transport in 1970. when new they had Northern Counties dual door Bus Grant specification bodies. Between 1983 and 1986, twelve of these buses were selected for refurbishment. This consisted of upgrading the chassis to AN68 standard, and rebodying to single door with this (Gtr Manchester) style bodywork. In 1990, when Transit withdrew these buses from service, East Yorkshire purchased eight of the twelve as they had a requirement for Double Deckers with power assisted steering. They had long lives with East Yorkshire, the last going only fairly recently I believe. Interestingly the other four of the Class also ended up on Humberside with KHCT, which by 1994 a Transit subsidury company. this meant that all twelve were in the same area with two different operators. The Cleveland Transit identities of these two are as follows, NJI1251 was formerly SXG50H/fnH50, whilst FBZ2933 was formerly SDC143H/H43. The 'H' prefix indicated wether a bus could pass under a low Railway Bridge in Middlesbrough. these two were amongst those which couldn't, so they were prefixed 'H'

I was very fortunate to fly on Concorde it was awesome. Sadly with 911 and the Paris crash it was very quickly seen as an expensive perk for the elite. I think Concorde was very much like a RouteMaster,an Icon and very hard to replace. New designs come and go but they don't compare!

When VPF 285S was stolen by Reading Buses, its fleet number was 285 and not 520 because 520 should have been used by an Optare Delta.

This bus was 955 in Alder Valley days. Reading Buses numbered it 520 as it was the number from the Bee Line renumbering series when the business was acquired. Delta 520 was not delivered until 1996, some 10 months after 520 the VRT was withdrawn and sold to Oakley Coaches near Basingstoke. Although you may consider it "stolen" Reading Buses actually repaired and refurbished this vehicle after a major head on collision and it was the first to wear the fleet livery. It is currently being restored by myself back to this condition, as when I drove it in service.

As a replacement for the Metrobus,Dennis were on the button with the Trident. The Ride is good and the ability to work in both single or dual door formats is very good.Plaxton are probably not the name associated with double deck bodies,Alexander were to get a big slice of the market.Sadly Reading Buses have chosen to overlook these fine vehicles. The Reading Buses fleet is too fragmented,I would have Optare Solos for rural routes.Dennis Tridents for busy routes and either Transbus Enviro 300's or Scanias. For private hire I would have new MAN coaches.

An ex-GMT Scania 112 bus wiith northern counties body. To the almost usual selnec/gmt standard. Shame the bus is not in GMT colours though. This might might have been lucky and gone into preservation.

Ha! ha! you'll be lucky as with all black prince second hand buses the engine exploded on this bus on the 22nd may 2003 while on the X88 leeds-Whitkirk service and due to te fact it was 20 years old anyway it wasnt worth repairing if you're lucky you may find bits of it lying about the pvs yard at barnsley sorry!!!!!!!

Exploded engine or not,the bus saw further use with Aintree coachline and then LMS buses, both in Merseyside, and has since pased into preservation with the SELNEC preservation society. It's currently waiting restoration, but is a runner and should be back in GMT colours in a couple of years. Its only sister,GMT1462,wasn't so lucky and was scrapped after the discovery of a cracked chassis.

It was sad that this bus was not to be the start of an new era!! The idea of 2 staircases and a rear exit was not so daft. Sadly the unions were unable to see what was on offer. It's nice to see it was repaired and returned to service.I hope it gets to have a good service history.

This Volvo Ailsa was new to West Midlands PTE in 1976 as its 4743, and was sold to London Buses in 1987 for use on Harrow Buses services, along with the rest of the batch numbered 4738-87, which had been declared non-standard by WM. However, they lasted only three years in the capital before falling victim to tender awards dictating new buses.

Purple Motors/ y Moduron Porffor ran from Bangor to Bethesda for many years. A truly local company forthe local people. For many years the company had an ADMINISTRATRIX (!) - Mrs Pritchard. Mr Davies, her defacto Manager also managed Deiniolen Motors. When taken over by Crosville Wales, some of the local people were in tears at the loss of their bus company. Mrs P. and Mr D. were very well liked in the town.

Y Seren Arian/Silver Star are one of the few surviving pioneer bus companies still running into Caernarfon. Originally based in Rhostryfan, the former proprietor (known locally as 'Nedw') showed great kindness towards enthusiasts and locals alike. In the 'seventies, their fleet comprised 20 year old Leylands and Bristols (inc SC types) that when under full load could only crawl slowly uphill accompanied by an exhaust-beat that truly ROARED !

This and the next couple vehicles in the same registration series shown in the next few images, are former Stagecoach Transit vehicles. There are five of them, (M223SVN--M227SVN), and they were new to Stagecoach Transit in 1995. They were the first new double deckers to Stagecoach specification, but were delivered in Cleveland Transit's smart de-regulation livery as part of the initial arrangement to keep Cleveland's livery for three years after the Stagecoach takeover in 1994 . It is good to see them still active in Humberside.

Sadly these days we are lions led by donkeys! Big firms get bigger by ripping us off and expecting the public to put up and shut up!! First are a good example! First are not really able to do much without messing things up! I can say that seldom can you look at a bus operated by First and feel you want to go by bus! The buses are either dented or scruffy, why not wash or repair them!! Artic buses catch fire and are too slow to be any good! Why doesn't someone have the testicular fortitude to make buse people want to travel on?? We need a modern Routemaster, the folks that made "the classic bus" had no computers and the like as do most companies. So much for progress! Wake up and smell the coffee,we are being taken for fools. First would like to take us for a ride, tell them where to go. On your bike First,we don't need you!!

This ex-london Northern fleetline is seen in service with Morley's of Whittlesey on service 701 to Coates, just like the company the bus is in poor condition. Morley's never had any brand new buses throughout their service history and the company finally folded and sold ALL their vehicles and service 701 to Coach operator Alec Head in January 2006.

First West Yorkshire 40963 was originally new to BeeLine in 1995 as its 213. Centrewest originally taken over BeeLine and fellow company London Buslines in around 1995. First Group took over Centrewest and its associated subsidairies in 1997. 40963 was transfered from First BeeLine at Bracknell to First West Yorkshire in 2003.

Another of Yorkshire Riders brilliant Alexander bodied metrobuses seen in Leeds city bus station in the famous ''Pay before you go'' livery Im pretty sure that Yorkshire Rider had another Metrobus with an all-over version of this livery as a showbus but Im not sure can someone confirm this?

7511 and 7520 were in the Kerching/Pay Before You Go livery (which was white before deregulation and cream afterwards) and 7514 was retained by WYPTE as a showbus, in a cream and red livery. 7514 actually still survives with a Church/community group in Bradford. Take a look at the Transport Yorkshire Preservation Group website at http://www.typg.org.uk if you have time.

I never understood why Reading took only 1 batch of Spectras from Eastbourne, the batch R770-5MDY were identical and could have fitted in well. The batch S876-881BYJ are well used and I just wonder if it was a case of not being too sure.

Well we needed some left over in Eastbourne for schools and that. What replaced the spectras were rubbish. Slow, loud and half of the excels in the fleet were off the road much of the time, so struggled to have enough buses on the road.

I think just like The Leyland National,The Optare Excel was one of those vehicles where some operators liked them and others were glad to get rid of them!I suppose you could call it the "Marmite" effect! I know that plenty of the Excels that Reading Buses had were snapped up and exported to New Zealand.Maybe that's where the 10 that were exchanged will end up as opposed to the scrap yards of Yorkshire.

The older livery had been introduced a long time ago,now it is replaced by a more suitable livery. In time this old livery will become the norm, but the fleet is considerable and it could be the case that new vehicles will have the new livery and older buses might be withdrawn and not carry the new livery.

Probably one of the smartest buses I've seen in the fleet. Doesn't it look good in the Barbie livery with little dirt or damage. The wheelnut ring is also another thing that improves its appearence. UIf only all First's buses were like this....

Isn't it good to see lovely, fresh, new vehicles, especially in a fleet which prides itself on poor presentation, old buses, bad driving and no destination blinds. This one looks stunning.

Buses 824 & 828 were delivered with out of sequence registrations. Were the registrations swapped it would have not been so weird.About 6weeks after entering service 828 was given "MRD1" the cherished registration but it is not the flagship of the fleet. As a result 824 has got a registration that it was not intended to carry!

I think it's a matter of time before this bus finally gets sold, the decision had been made to remove non standard buses from the fleet. Also the service reductions have had an impact. It currently operates in Newbury, from where some of the vehicles are being sent to Reading to allow for the vodafone buses to go back to Newbury. It could be kept as a spare vehicle but that depends on their being enough need for it.

These Buses are the latest in a long line of interesting vehicles, which dealt with Newcastle's regular Viking invasions. There was origially a Rail service from Central Station to the Tyne Commission Quay at North Shields, this ceased around 1970, to be replaced by Buses worked jointly by the PTE, and Northern. During the 70s, the PTEs contribution, were some of the famous ex Ribble/Standerwick stretched Bristol VR motorway coaches. these were replaced by several dedicated (and modified ) types of Buses, the best known of which were perhaps, a batch of eight former Gateshead ECW bodied Atlanteans of the NCNXXXL batch, used until the middle 90s.

These Buses are truly magnificent, they are easily Go North Easts best assets, apart from looking exceptionally good, they have re-vitalised the important Tees-Tyne X10 Services. Go North East hve definately got it right with these. Every time I see one, I remember the appalling journey I had on an X10 service around 1994, it was a horrific Leyland National, deputising for an unavailable Metro Bus, and we were stuck on the side seats above the front wheelarch. a nightmarish ride if ever there was one. These things are great! You might be interested to know that three journeys out of four, are covered by these Gemini Eclipse's, whilst the fourth journey is covered by something else, usually an Olympian of some discription.

Hi Mark, it could be the fact your taking pics of peeps that dont want their pic taken or it is i think illegal to take pics of people without their permission and plaster them on the internet, it is fine and ok to take a pic of a bus if thats what you like, but ensure that the driver wants his/her picture taken and advertised for sale on here
[#8754020] 2008-07-02 19:50:17 Left by Mark Amis (#0) Reply
Actually, it is NOT illegal to take pictures in this country unless it is a military installation. This has been confirmed to me by many Police officers. Check them out at the nick over the road from the bus station if you don't believe me. Besides, just think how many times a driver has their picture taken by CCTV cameras, traffic cameras etc during the day. Even the buses have cameras on them. If you don't want your pic taken whilst at work - don't get a job were it will happen.
[#8756436] 2008-07-12 17:55:30 Left by linn (#0) Reply
As you can see mark i did say THINK is illegal, i did not emphasise it was or is not, but if not then fine, but maybe you need to check it is ok especially when their face is quite clear on here that is ok with them to place their picture on the internet for sale. Another thing without sounding rude is i do not have a job where i have my picture taken, or advised i was a bus driver so maybe dont jump to conclusions. I dont even know where pontypridd is by the way let alone the police station(nick)

The Optare SOLO was quite an achievement. Reading/Newbury Buses took 25 of these over a few years.Sadly the earlier examples have been sold and seem to be well liked by their new owners.Optare vehicles are being phased out of Reading,Scania seemingly the preferred choice for new vehicles.

I must say Optare have done some good things and some not so great things. In Reading (where I live) we had a good mixture of Optare vehicles. Yes the MetroRider had short comings and Optare made a good effort at giving it a new lease of life. The Spectra was apparently their attempt at building a successor to the Metrobus! Now Optare don't make double deckers! The Delta was quite popular with operators and had a very design. The Excel is awful and seems to be replaced by another attempt at being different. The Solo was a very fine design and deserves to do well. The problem with Optare is they try to be too different! Yes you must get recognised but the name Optare seems to be out of favour with quite a few folk. Maybe they have seen that Optare are now running out of steam and the likes of Scania are giving them a run for their money!

One of the batch of Dennis Tridents in use around Reading. These fine vehicles have served well and alas no more have been purchased it makes a change from the Optare Spectra and in my view is a better vehicle. This is a generic livery for any route, most buses are painted in a dedicated livery and the spares carry this style of livery.

One of the first batch of Scania buses to be introduced to Reading, the fleet has been modernized with new dedicated route liveries and Scania buses to match.Gone are the old Metrobuses and the like,Quality travel has come to Reading. I think the silver version is a bit more practical. To me this is to gloomy for such a fine vehicle.

At one point Optare was a popular choice for Reading Buses, now most of the fleet is Scania vehicles.Optare are not bad but seem to be not so well liked these days.My 2 favourite Optare vehicles are the Delta and the Solo.I don't know if Optare are going to make a replacement for the Spectra.Reading Bueses are all single door examples now and the majority are colour coded for routes.Spare vehicles wear a silver version, though a few vehicles still wear the older charcoal version which was tried first.

This bus currently owned by Swanbrook, operates school services in Gloucester. Not sure it was a Bennett's bus while in this livery, I believe this was Swanbrook's old livery, they have now switched to a livery which is predominantly cream/off white with green and purple striped pattern similar to the pattern shown here

Yes I know about its history - this pic is to continue its allocation history. I have a pic of it with Manchester here and here before it lost its roof.

14. Birmingham Old Square has seen hundreds of metrobuses passing around it over the years. The vast majority, if not all of them, being WMPTE/WMT examples. Not many, if any, GMPTE ones have been seen here which was the whole reason for me to drive that way. Pity that there weren't any other photters out to record the occasion. Thanks to Matt Reynolds for supplying the pic.

Michael - yes it did work out of Glossop, for many years. It was also one painted into Stagecoach stripes as you suggest - the roof of her is still in that livery. See picture 2 in the collection for a pic of her in this scheme.
